Deputies Warn Of New Phone Scam

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that sheriff’s detectives are investigating reports of a phone scam in Onondaga County.

Citizens have received phone calls that display the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Unit phone number, 315-435-3032. A male advises the victims that they have a warrant against them and have 45 minutes to resolve the issue or the police will come to arrest them. The male then gives the victims a phone number to call, 904-410-2217, and states that it is the US Dept. of Treasury.

When the victims call that number, no one answers, however their phone call is immediately returned. The victims are told that they owe money that must be paid with a GreenDot MoneyPak card or they will go to jail. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office does not phone individuals in order to pay fines utilizing store debit cards.

Anyone feeling that they were a victim of any similar scams should call the Onondaga County Sheriffs Office of Criminal Investigations Division at 435–3081.
