Deputy Cleared In Shooting

An Onondaga County Grand Jury has cleared an Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputy in an officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 7.

The incident occurred in the Town of Onondaga when the officer was forced to fire his service weapon at Arcadio Figueroa.

Sheriff's Detectives had taken Figueroa to his residence at Everingham Road to recover property alleged to have been stolen during a burglary at Onondaga Lake Park, where he was an employee. Although handcuffed, Figueroa was able to grab a sawed-off shotgun that was hidden under a mattress.

After initially pointing the shotgun at himself, he then turned it towards one of the detectives and another deputy. The deputy fired twice, striking Figueroa in his groin and thigh. The grand jury determined that the deputy was justified in firing his weapon.

Figueroa is now being held in the Justice Center. He's been indicted on charges of Menacing a Police Officer, Second Degree Burglary and Third Degree Burglary.
