Upstate Medical University President Resigns

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ The president of the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse says he's resigning.

According to a letter posted on the web site of the Albany Times Union, David Smith says he intends to submit his resignation as president ``so that this great institution can move on to even greater success.''

Smith is on leave and facing a state review of his compensation. He allegedly took hundreds of thousands of dollars in unapproved payments from companies with ties to Upstate.

Smith says in the letter he will continue to cooperate fully to bring the review to a swift conclusion.

Smith, a pediatrician, served five years as chancellor of Texas Tech University before becoming president of SUNY Upstate in 2005.
